SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, May 28, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Investigators with the Salt Lake City Police Department used the department’s Hazardous Device Unit robot to check out two suspicious circumstance calls over the Memorial Day Weekend.
In a Magna case, the HDU robot helped detectives determine the object posed no danger.
In the Salt Lake City case, the investigation is ongoing, a SLCPD news release says.
The first investigation began at 10:53 a.m. Sunday when a caller contacted dispatch about a suspicious item found in a grassy area near 1400 North and 7200 West, in Magna.
“Due to the appearance of the item, officers requested assistance from the SLCPD’s Hazardous Devices Unit,” an SLCPD public relations department statement says.
“Detectives used a robot to take photos of the object. After a thorough investigation, detectives rendered the item safe.” No details about the object were released.
As the first investigation continued, dispatch was contacted about items found in a rental car at Salt Lake City International Airport.
“The items included components typically used for controlled explosives, such as construction or demolition,” the news release says.
“HDU detectives responded and safely secured the items. Detectives are continuing their investigation.”
The department urged people who spot a potentially dangerous device not to approach it or handle it. Instead, call 9-1-1.
