Snow College student arrested, accused of ‘waving handgun’ in student center

EPHRAIM, Utah, Oct. 7, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A Snow College student was booked into the Sanpete County jail Monday on suspicion of possession of a dangerous weapon on or about school grounds.

The student, identified as Denis Kharitonov, was in possession of a handgun on the Snow College Ephraim Campus, an Ephraim City Police news release says.

According to the news release, Sanpete County Dispatch received a call at 3:13 p.m. Monday, reporting that a person was waving a handgun inside the Greenwood Student Center on campus.

Snow College Police Department officers responded along with surrounding Sanpete County agencies.

The student center was placed on lockdown, and officers cleared the entire building without locating the suspect. Kharitonov, however, had been identified during the incident.

Officers found him in his apartment, and he was taken into custody at 4:13 p.m., an hour after the incident was first reported.

The lockdown was then lifted.

Officers found a carbon-dioxide powered BB gun in the apartment, the news release says.

Kharitonov was charged with disorderly conduct in addition to the handgun possession charge.
