SNOWBIRD, Utah, Sept. 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 25-year-old man is in critical condition after he jumped from a fifth-floor room balcony at Snowbird Ski Resort Saturday while extremely intoxicated, police said.

Unified Police Department Det. Chuck Malm said initially it did not appear that the man was suicidal, and it was more likely that his level of intoxication, as well as confusion, led to the incident that occurred just after 11 p.m. However, after further police investigation, Malm said it appears the jump was an intentional act and the man was attempting to harm himself.

Malm said the man had a room on the first floor of Snowbird’s Iron Blosam Lodge, but followed a group up to their room on the fifth floor.

“He didn’t say much to them,” Malm said. “They welcomed him into their room and he walked directly to the balcony, climbed over and jumped.”

The annual Oktoberfest, Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 9, was taking place that day at the resort, but had ended at 6 p.m.

Gephardt Daily does not generally report on suicide attempts unless there is an impact to the public.
