SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 4, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man accused in the death of his father was sentenced to prison on Monday.
Shane Paul Wright, 26, originally was charged with first-degree murder in the 2016 death of his father, Bryan Wright, 53, of Holladay.
Shane Wright accepted a plea deal, and on Monday was sentenced to 1 to 15 years in Utah State Prison, with a recommendation he get credit for 857 days (2.3 years) already served. The judge ordered Wright’s commitment begin immediately.
A probable cause statement in the case reveals that on Oct. 1, 2016, officers responded to the 4000 South block of Solar Circle, Holladay, on the report of a medical issue.
A male, later identified as Shane Wright, was standing in the front yard.
Responding officers found an electrical cord wrapped around the neck of Bryan Wright, who was transported to a hospital in extremely critical condition.
Wright’s condition did not improve over several days, and there was no indication of brain activity, so life support was withdrawn on Oct. 5, the probable cause statement says.
An autopsy on Oct. 6 determined strangulation was Wright’s cause of death.
“Wright stated, post-Miranda, that he put his hands around his dad’s neck and squeezed, but he didn’t feel like he had enough strength,” the probable statement says.
“Wright described strangling is father with an extension cord and smothering him with a pillow.”
