SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Nov. 16, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have made an arrest after an alleged armed road-rage incident on Nov. 8, which reportedly involved someone the arrested man knows.

Ricardo Dionel Iguaran-Gutierrez was booked into the Salt Lake County jail system on Thursday for investigation of the following charges, each with a road rage enhancement:

  • Four counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
  • Felony discharge of a firearm – shoot in the direction of person, a third-degree felony
  • Possession, use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony
  • Reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor
  • Threat/use of a dangerous weapon in fight, a class A misdemeanor

The incident happened at about 11 a.m. Nov. 8 in the area of 11486 S. District Drive.

Multiple witnesses told police an argument following a road-rage incident had “escalated to shots being fired,” says Iguaran’s affidavit, filed by an officer of the South Jordan Police Department.

The witnesses called the South Jordan Police Department, and one stated that a friend had threatened him and his friends with a weapon in the Chik-Fil-A parking lot.

“The victim reported they live near each other at the Copperwood apartment complex and that they are sure he fled that direction. The victims stated the suspects name is Dionel Iguaran.

“They provided a picture of the suspect (picture taken today during the argument) that was researched by ICE using facial recognition. Dionel was confirmed as the suspect.

“The victim stated that Dionel presented a weapon and pointed it at him and his friends; threatening to kill them all. This was done during the course of an argument. The suspect then fired one round in an unknown direction and fled the area. The victims were stating the argument began over a traffic incident and video evidence shows suspect chasing the victim for some time around various businesses with a firearm in hand.”

Investigators interviewed witnesses of the incident, and “they stated they knew of the suspect, Dionel. They said they live near Dionel and regularly have talked to him due to familial issues they had been having.”

The victim and the family of Iguaran said, “The issues began because Dionel is now dating one of the victim’s ex-girlfriends.”

They also mentioned Iguaran and the victim had been in a previous road-rage incident that occurred the previous night, Nov. 7, the affidavit says.

Iguaran could not be found until Thursday of this week. A warrant had been granted to ping his phone, but the location service had been turned off, and the ping did not provide viable feedback.

A subsequent “extensive search history was completed,” which enabled police to check areas Iguaran had been known to frequent. At a previous apartment address, officers located Iguaran’s vehicle and proceeded to track it. Iguaran “was found in his car, driven by his brother, on southbound Interstate 15 in Utah County.

Iguaran, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, does not have a driver’s license. He was arrested and is being held without bail.
