SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Sept. 28, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A sinkhole that was discovered at about 5 a.m. Thursday has closed roads near 4255 W. South Jordan Parkway. Road repair workers are excavating asphalt in a hole they expect to be at least 20 feet by 20 feet.

“We are assessing the damage, and will see how deep it goes,” said Tina Brown, city spokeswoman, at about noon. “As soon as we get the asphalt removed, we are hoping to put soil back in.”

Until work is complete, the roadway will be reduced to one lane going in each direction, she said.

Brown said the soil was washed away by irrigation back flow after an underground pipe broke.

“Sometime in the middle of the night, they’re estimating at about 3 a.m., it started to shoot water out from underground, causing the soil to be washed away and the asphalt to sink,” Brown said.

“Luckily, no one drove over it, and no one was injured.”

Brown said it’s early for an estimate, but repair costs will be in the thousands. Brown said costs will be paid by the private utility company that is responsible for the pipes and their maintenance.

The streets are the city’s responsibility, she said, and the area underneath is the responsibility of the utility, which employs the crews that were on scene.
