SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 27, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Southbound Redwood Road at California Avenue is closed Thursday afternoon after a fatal traffic accident, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

“We had a vehicle that was stolen, we’re still trying to confirm that,” SLCPD Det. Michael Ruff told Gephardt Daily. “Somebody called it into us and said they believed it was a stolen vehicle that they were aware of. It took off, one of our officers possibly tried to stop it but didn’t follow it.”

Sometime after the officer tried to stop the vehicle, it crashed several blocks away.

“The driver was ejected; that individual was taken to an area hospital where they did die from their injuries,” Ruff said. “There was a passenger in the vehicle, uninjured or minor injuries, we are talking with them now as part of the investigation.”

The deceased individual has not been identified pending notification of family.

Ruff said the entire intersection is closed as of 5 p.m. and likely will remain so for three to four hours.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is provided.
