SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 12, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A stabbing suspect and his victim are both in the hospital following an altercation outside of The Road Home shelter Saturday night.

Lt. Scott Smalley, of the Salt Lake City Police Department, said the incident occurred at 11:36 p.m. outside the shelter at 210 S. Rio Grande St.

Smalley said surveillance video from the shelter shows the suspect approaching a man and a woman who are sitting outside. The suspect has a knife in his hand.

The victim was stabbed near his neck, but was able to wrestle the knife away and slashed the suspect on the arm and neck, Smalley said.

The suspect was transported to University of Utah Medical Center, where he underwent surgery Saturday night.

The victim was taken to LDS Hospital, where he, too, had surgery.

Smalley said it wasn’t immediately known what started the altercation, but police were talking with the woman who was with the victim and witnessed the incident.

The suspect was “not necessarily cooperative and was somewhat belligerent,” Smalley said. He will be booked for aggravated assault upon his release from the hospital.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
