PROVO, Utah, April 19, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 21-year-old Provo U.S. Army reservist has been arrested after a stolen block of C4 plastic explosive was found in his apartment, police said.
Provo Police said in a news release officers became aware that a stolen block of C$ explosive was allegedly being stored in an apartment complex located in the area of 600 N. 200 East on Sunday night.
“Officers contacted members of the Provo Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team who responded to assist,” the news release said. “EOD members conducted an investigation and eventually obtained a search warrant for Adam Garceau’s residence.
“To ensure the safety of all the apartment building residents, officers evacuated the building for the search warrant. During the course of the search, one of the Provo bomb dogs, Mira, indicated on a locked container. After opening that container, a second locked ammo box was found inside. EOD members opened that container and found a full-sized block of military issued C4 explosive.”
Garceau was booked into the Utah County Jail for possession of an explosive and possession of stolen property. Garceau allegedly stole the C4 from his military unit.
C-4 or Composition C-4 is a common variety of the plastic explosive family known as Composition C, said Wikipedia. C-4 is composed of explosives, plastic binder, plasticizer to make it malleable, and usually a marker or odorizing taggant chemical.
C-4 has a texture similar to modeling clay and can be molded into any desired shape. C-4 is stable, and an explosion can only be initiated by the combination of extreme heat and shock wave from a detonator.
