VERNAL, Utah, Dec. 10, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Uintah High School student is in custody after he allegedly announced to a classroom of fellow students that he was leaving the room and had a gun in his backpack.

A news release from Uintah County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred at the school, at 1880 W. 500 North in Vernal, on Monday morning.

“When the student left the room the teacher immediately notified school administrators, who quickly located the student with the assistance of a Uintah County sheriff’s deputy assigned to the high school,” the news release said. “The student was found before the school could be placed on lockdown.”

The student did not have a gun, officials said. The sheriff’s deputy took the student into custody and removed him from campus.

“Uintah High School administrators and Uintah County sheriff’s deputies have determined there is no threat to the school or its students despite one student’s claim that he had a firearm on campus,” the news release said.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
