SUGAR HOUSE, UTAH – August 29, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Participants thronged to Sugar House Park today for the 5th annual Children’s Tumor Foundation Utah Neurofibromatosis (NF) Walk.
The event this morning included a walk for everyone, as well as a Kids’ Hero Dash specifically for smaller yet mighty superheroes. Many family-friendly activities were also involved including a DJ, photo booth, face painting, refreshments, a raffle including Disney tickets and more. Superhero costumes were encouraged for all who attended, and capes were provided for the kids.
One in 3,000 people worldwide are living with NF, a disorder that can cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. NF can cause blindness, bone abnormalities, cancer, deafness, disfigurement, learning disabilities and disabling pain. It affects people of all cultures, races and genders equally. There is no cure and there are no effective treatments—yet.
Kelly Carpenter, a spokeswoman for the event, said: “We have families across Utah as well as Idaho and Wyoming that come together for a sense of community for NF. This is our way as a community to get together and support. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we hope to raise $20,000 for the Children’s Tumor Foundation to help further advances.”
Participant Kuile Moriyama came along because his neighbor has NF. “We are here to support my neighbor, it’s a difficult thing to live with but we’re here to support him and do all we can to help.”
