ST. GEORGE, Utah, Dec. 16, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect is in custody after he attempted to escape a police car while he was en route to jail in Washington County.
A probable cause statement from the 5th District Court of Washington County said Grover Baskerville Jackson III, 40, is facing charges of:
- Escape from official custody, a third-degree felony
- Criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor
- Interference with an arresting officer, a class B misdemeanor
- Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor
On Friday, an officer was dispatched to a report of a disorderly male that was screaming, and yelling at a residence in Washington City, the arresting officer wrote in the probable cause statement.
“While en route I was advised that the male had left the residence and was now running down the street,” the statement said.
“The suspect was identified and a physical description was given of the male. Upon arrival, officers located Grover Jackson approximately one block away from the original address where the call had originated.”
The arresting officer said he could detect a strong odor of alcohol coming from the suspect.
“I met with the victim who stated that Grover had been living with him for approximately the last four months,” the statement said. “He stated that Grover had become irate and started to become very agitated. The victim stated that Grover broke a TV and ripped the blinds off the wall from the front window. In the process the blinds were damaged.”
Officers also received a second 911 call from a next door neighbor informing them that she could hear Jackson screaming and yelling and there were also several loud crashes that she was able to hear inside of her apartment.
Jackson was taken into custody and while en route to jail the suspect was able to get his hands to the front of his body as they were originally placed in handcuffs with his hands behind his back. As officers were driving to the jail Jackson was able to get his prisoner area window open; he was able to get approximately 60 percent of his body out of the vehicle before officers were able to safely pull over, the statement said.
“Officers gave Grover several commands and he physically resisted with officers as they attempted to gain control of him,” the statement said.
Jackson was transported to Washington County Jail with his bail set at $5,000.
The felony was committed while the suspect was out on probation or parole.
