WEST JORDAN, Utah, June 6, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect wanted on a California felony warrant was shot and killed Friday night during a SWAT operation in West Jordan.
Sgt. J.C. Holt told Gephardt Daily that the dead man, 34-year-old Jose Martinez, was wanted for aggravated kidnapping in the Sacramento area of California.
The Friday incident began at about 6:30 p.m. with officers from the State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI trying to track down Martinez, Holt said.
“They were trying to apprehend the suspect, and located him in our area, and called our officers for assistance,” he said. “Our officers converged in area, and the suspect would run and hide, and kept moving. He ended up in a condo owned or rented by his family, or some other connection.”
The condo was near 6800 S. Prairie Dunes Drive, which is near 3800 West, Holt said.
Officers from multiple agencies were involved, as were at least two K9s — those from the West Jordan Police Department.
“He barricaded himself in, and negotiations did not go well,” Holt said. “He was insinuating that he had a weapon. Around 11 p.m., the SWAT team made entry into the home, shots were fired, and the suspect is deceased.”
Holt said he had not yet been informed if a weapon was found on Martinez.
The officer who fired the fatal shot was placed on leave in keeping with Officer Involved Critical Incident protocol. The West Valley Police Department will be investigating the OICI case.
Holt said the warrant was several weeks old, and officials do not yet know how long Martinez had been in Utah.
Just save the taxpayer payers a lifetime of paying for him.
That CS was like a mad dog they had to shoot dead in the street. His aim in life was destruction. I never knew him or was in his path but he is gone. Nobody will remember his name just the shit he was involved in that caused the establishment to get rid of him.
