KEARNS, Utah, Dec. 13, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspected car thief is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase from Midvale to Kearns early Wednesday morning.

Unified Police Department Lt. Ken Malone said officers spotted a car, which they believed was being driven by a homicide suspect, at about 12:30 a.m. at 7200 South and 300 East, in Midvale.

“Some of our officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the vehicle fled,” Malone said.

Police pursued the vehicle westbound with speeds reaching up to 100 miles per hour and successfully spiked its tires near 5400 South and Bangerter Highway, but the car continued.

Officials lost sight of the car for a few minutes then spotted it, abandoned, near 5600 W. Trident Drive (5300 South) in Kearns. The driver had fled on foot.

“A containment was set up and we did an exhaustive search with K-9 units,” Malone said. Multiple agencies assisted with the containment, he said.

The suspect was located by K-9 units near the abandoned car, and was taken into custody.

It turns out the man is not the homicide suspect police suspected, but he was arrested on suspicion of car theft and other charges.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
