WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, April 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police investigators from multiple agencies are at the scene of a deadly officer-involved shooting in the area of 3580 S. Jenelles Bay near 2140 West on Sunday afternoon.
According to West Valley City Police, the shooting occurred at about 3:39 p.m.
In a news conference later Sunday, West Valley City Police Chief Colleen Jacobs said officers were called at about 3:15 p.m. to the scene of a theft at a cellphone store at 3411 S. Redwood Road.
Officers approached the suspect and he fled on foot, Jacobs said. The officers followed him.
He then entered a home near 1900 West and 3500 South, where he had a confrontation with the homeowners.
The suspect then fled and successfully forced entry into another home. In that home were three children, ages pre-teen and younger, Jacobs said.
At some point, Jacobs said, “at least three officers entered the home, shots were fired, and the suspect is deceased.”
“To our knowledge, the suspect has no connection to either home,” she said.
Police were already searching the area for the suspect, described as an adult male in a gray hoodie and black pants.
Jacobs said she was not able to provide more information regarding the suspect or how police tracked him to the location where he was shot, pending an official investigation.
The three children who were in the home at the time are safe and uninjured, she added.
No information was made available regarding the number of shots fired or whether the suspect was armed.
“It’s all part of the protocol investigation,” Jacobs said.
The Unified Police Department’s Officer Involved Critical Incident protocol team will conduct the investigation into the incident.
UPD Lt. Brian Lohrke said officials had submitted a request for a search warrant so they could enter the home to begin the investigation process.
Lohrke said the results of the investigation will be given to Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill.
