WEST JORDAN, Utah, Oct. 11, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in West Jordan on Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. J.C. Holt with West Jordan Police Department told Gephardt Daily three officers were dispatched to an apartment in the area of 7000 S. Cherry Leaf Drive (3800 West) at approximately 4:20 p.m. on a report of a domestic assault.

“The officers got on scene and met with the individuals involved,” Holt said. “There was a male suspect that got into an altercation with the officer inside the apartment. That altercation is under investigation right now but we have an officer who fired a shot or shots at the suspect, striking him and killing him.”

It’s not clear if the suspect was armed, Holt said.

The other person involved was a woman, Holt said. Holt said the two parties had a previous relationship and lived together in the past. Neither the woman or any of the officers on scene sustained any injuries.

Holt added there was an infant inside the apartment when the altercation occurred. It is not known if the woman’s infant was the child of the suspect.

Holt added that the apartment is the residence of the victim, not the suspect, and that officers have responded to that same location in the past on similar complaints.

“I don’t have specifics on the altercation with the officer but there was an altercation and the officer utilized his handgun,” Holt said.

The suspect has not been named pending notification of family.

Holt said per officer involved shooting protocol, Unified Police Department is on scene to investigate the incident.

He said it’s likely the officer will be placed on leave. The officer has been with the WJPD for less that two years, Holt added.
