Suspected DUI driver allegedly backs into UPD vehicle, prompting second-agency response

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Nov. 2, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was charged with DUI and other offenses after he allegedly backed into an unmarked Unified Police car early Saturday morning.

Jose Angel Fitzpatrick, 21, was booked on DUI, a class B misdemeanor: possession of a controlled substance, a class B misdemeanor; open container, a class C misdemeanor; and improper backing, an infraction.

The accident happened at about 1:15 a.m. at 1141 W. Meadowbrook Expressway.

Because of a possible conflict of interest with a UPD officer involved in the collision, a second agency — South Salt Lake Police Department — was called in to investigate.

Detective Kevin Mallory, Unified Police Department, said the parked officer tried to move his vehicle out of the way, but was unable to move fast enough to avoid the impact. Neither person suffered injuries, Mallory said, and no one was transported to the hospital.
