WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, March 24, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A structure fire at an abandoned church and daycare Wednesday night in West Valley City is being considered suspicious by fire officials.

West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Fox said the call came into dispatchers just before 11 p.m. of a fire at 2574 S. Redwood Road.

“The fire appears to have started in a shed next to the building, then the flames jumped to the attic of the structure,” Fox said.

“We have approximately 30 firefighters who have been battled the blaze, but they were not able to enter the structure for about 15 minutes after arrival.”

Fox said once they were able to gain access, the fire was contained fairly quickly.

The building used to be the Valley Free Will Baptist Church and My Little Angel Childcare, but Fox said the building has been vacant for about a year.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and an estimate of damage has not been determined.
