SANDY, Utah, June 5, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect who barricaded himself inside a Sandy apartment complex Tuesday afternoon prompting a SWAT standoff has been arrested.

Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray told Gephardt Daily the suspect has been identified as Nicholas Waitkevich, 25.

Waitkevich barricaded himself inside the Axio 8400 Apartments near 50 E. 8375 South at approximately 3 p.m., Gray said. The situation was resolved peacefully just before 5 p.m.

There were initially other people inside the apartment, but they were all able to exit safely, Gray said.

The incident started as a “fugitive apprehension operation” with U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Gray said the Strike Team had received information that there was a robbery suspect inside the apartment complex.

Waitkevich was wanted for first-degree felony robbery out of Salt Lake City, Gray said. She said the suspect had arranged to purchase some property from a social media site, and the suspect then met up with the seller and pistol whipped and robbed him.

It’s not known at this time whether Waitkevich is a resident of the apartment complex.

Though the complex is in Sandy, the incident was handled by UPD because of the origin of the investigation.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this story as information becomes available.
