SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 17-year-old boy shot himself late Monday afternoon while sitting in a car outside of Oakridge Elementary School.

The teen died from the gunshot wound, said Lt. Brian Lohrke, spokesman for the Unified Police Department.

The boy did not attend or work at the school, at 4325 S. Jupiter Drive (3755 East), Salt Lake City, but did live nearby, Lohrke said.

School was not in session Monday due to the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. A victim’s advocate was called out to assist the victim’s family as needed.

Gephardt Daily does not usually report on suicides unless they occur in public places or otherwise impact the community.
