HIGHLAND, Utah, Aug. 8, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 17-year-old boy was transported to the University of Utah Hospital burn unit after an early morning crash in Highland.

The incident happened just after midnight Thursday morning, a statement from Lone Peak police says.

“One of our officers had just checked off duty and was driving home,” the post says. “He encountered a vehicle going well above the speed limit heading west on Canal Blvd in Highland. The officer turned on his emergency lights and flipped around to attempt a traffic stop.

“The vehicle proceeded to accelerate through a red light on Alpine Highway and failed to navigate the bend in the road. The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree in Windsor Meadows Park, where the vehicle burst into flames.

“Officers from Lone Peak Police Department and American Fork Police Department worked diligently to free the 17-year-old driver from the fiery wreckage. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.”

The teen was flown to the University of Utah Hospital burn center in Salt Lake City, the LPPD statement says.

“His condition is unknown at this time.”
