WEST JORDAN, Utah, Oct. 30, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two teen siblings were injured after being hit by a car while walking to school Tuesday morning.

West Jordan police Officer Scott List told Gephardt Daily the incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. in the area of 7500 S. 2700 West, when the siblings were on their way to West Jordan High School.

List said three teenage siblings were using a crosswalk, and had waited for southbound traffic to clear and crossed to the northbound lanes. A car that was driving northbound did not see them, List said, as it was still dark, and collided with one of the teens as she crossed. The driver then ran over the toe of another of the teens, a boy.

List said the two teens that were hit were both 13, though the information he has is that they were headed to the high school. Both were transported by ground ambulance to Riverton Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

The third teen was not hit, List said.

He added that the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. It appears at this point that the driver just did not see the teens because it was dark; List said impairment, distraction, and speed do not appear to be factors.

List said the incident serves as a reminder that particularly with Daylight Saving time this weekend, drivers need to pay extra attention and watch their speed especially around crosswalks, and young people need to wear reflective clothing if they are walking to school in the dark.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
