WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Jan. 15, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 15-year-old girl has admitted to starting a fire Friday morning that caused $100,000 in damage to a West Valley home and injured her father.

West Valley City firefighters were called to the home near 3800 South and 2200 West around 3 a.m. and found “a lot of fire and smoke coming out of the upstairs windows,” according to Fire Marshall Bob Fitzgerald.

While crews worked to knock down the fire, there were reports a 15-year-old girl living in the home might be trapped inside.

Her father received burns to his hands and feet while searching the home for her. He was transported to the University of Utah Burn Center.

Officers and fire crews on the scene soon determined the girl had run to her mother’s home a few blocks away. Once the teenager admitted to starting the fire, investigators began looking for the actual cause of the blaze. They have yet to release that information, or reveal if the fire was started accidentally or intentionally.

Fitzgerald told Gephardt Daily there were several renters living upstairs and in the basement of the home. Altogether, six people were displaced by the fire.
