WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, July 14, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — One man is hospitalized in serious, but stable condition, and two more were treated and released after shots were fired in a West Valley City neighborhood.
West Valley City Police Lt. Shane Matheson said the incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday. Police received several reports of shots fired near 5600 West and 4300 South.
“One victim was shot in the neck, chest and torso,” Matheson told Gephardt Daily. “A friend drove him to the hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery.”
A second victim had a gunshot wound to his leg, and a third had “a laceration on his wrist.” Both of those victims were transported by ambulance to the hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and released.
Matheson said the call initially came in as a drive-by shooting, but police now believe someone was making trouble outside the home, and when the occupants of the house came out, there was a confrontation and a fight ensued.
Police have been talking with witnesses who heard the shots and saw vehicles leaving the area. Matheson said the vehicles have been described as a white, older model Ford Mustang and a red or maroon Nissan Altima.
He said it isn’t yet known if the incident was gang- or drug-related, and detectives haven’t been able to speak with the most seriously wounded victim because he was still in surgery.
Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information is released.
