Tire blowout leads to fatal crash on Interstate 80

TOOELE COUNTY, August 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – A tire blowout on a passenger car led to the death of a truck driver Friday morning on westbound Interstate 80 in Tooele County.

According to Cpl. Luis Silva with the Utah Highway Patrol, the crash happened about 11:30 a.m. near milepost 107.

“A Mazda 3 passenger vehicle experienced a tire blowout,” Silva said. “The driver lost control of the Mazda, which then struck a dump truck. The dump truck hit a guardrail and rolled down an embankment before catching fire.

“The driver of the dump truck sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.”

The driver of the Mazda, identified as a 19-year-old female, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Westbound I-80 was closed for several hours while crash investigators cleared the scene.

The name of the truck driver has yet to be released.
