MILLCREEK, Utah, July 17, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A trio of good Samaritans tackled a suspect who pushed a clerk to the ground and attempted to rob a Millcreek tobacco store Monday morning.
Unified Police Department Lt. Brian Lohrke said authorities got a call just after 10:45 a.m. of a robbery that had just occurred at the Tobacco Store at 320 E. 3900 South.
Lohrke said the suspect tried to get past the counter toward a rack of cigarettes, the female clerk tried to stop him, at which point he pushed the clerk on the ground, grabbed the cigarettes and ran out of the store.
“As the suspect was leaving the store, three citizens saw him, chased him down and tackled him to the ground right in the area of 400 East just up the street from the store,” Lohrke said.
The suspect was taken into custody and identified as Glade James, 57.
The clerk was evaluated by medical personnel as a precaution.
Lohrke said the good Samaritans were also checked out by medical.
“We always want people to be cautious,” Lohrke added. “The three citizens are going to be going to the hospital, to get their injuries checked out, nothing major, just as a precaution.”
It does not appear that James was carrying a weapon.
The South Salt Lake Police Department also responded to the scene as the incident happened on the border of its jurisdiction and Millcreek.
