SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 13, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The mother of a 21-month-old girl left in a locked vehicle for approximately two hours on Wednesday has been arrested and faces a felony charge of child abandonment.
Salt Lake Police Lt. Robin Heiden said the incident began at 5 p.m., when a witness saw the woman, later identified as Akilah Davis, 36, park a white car in the area of 300 South and 500 West. The women then walked east, in the direction of The Road Home homeless shelter, Heiden said.
About 30 minutes later, that same witness spotted the child in the car. The witness flagged down a Utah Transit Authority officer, who made entry into the vehicle and removed the little girl. The SLCPD was then called at 5:25 p.m.
Medical checked the toddler out and she was unhurt, Heiden said. She added that it wasn’t too hot inside the car, though if the same thing had happened two weeks later, the incident could have had a different ending.
Police then looked for the child’s mother, and couldn’t find her. They decided to move their cars away from her vehicle, at which point she came back, at approximately 7:10 p.m.
Police took Davis into custody for questioning, and she was then arrested and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on charges including third-degree felony child abandonment.
According to a statement of probable cause, after being read her Miranda rights, Davis admitted to intentionally leaving the child alone in the vehicle while she went to the homeless shelter. A glass crack pipe with burnt drug residue was found on her person, and she admitted to obtaining the crack pipe at the shelter.
Utah Division of Child and Family Services officials responded and took the toddler into their care.
