Toddler dead, teen babysitter booked on child abuse homicide, West Valley City officials say

Roxeanne Vainuku, spokeswoman for the West Valley City Police Department, spoke with reporters Wednesday about the death of a toddler and the arrest of his teenage babysitter.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Jan. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 17-year-old boy has been taken into custody after a toddler who was in his care died, and was found to have multiple physical injuries.

The victim has been identified as 21-month-old Jaycieion Sanchez.

Emergency crews responded to a call reporting an unconscious child at about noon Tuesday, and sped to an apartment near 4600 South and 2900 West, West Valley City.

Officials encountered the teen, a non-relative of the victim and his younger sibling, whom the 17 year old had been hired to watch.

The toddler was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital, but could not be saved.

The teen has been booked into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center after his account of what transpired did not match evidence at the scene. He has been charged with child abuse — homicide.

Officials obtained a warrant, and searched the home. They also interviewed the victim’s mother and grandmother.

Investigators are working with the Utah Division of Child and Family Services in the case.

The victim’s mother has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover Jaycieion’s burial costs. The page shows a partial photo of the boy, with the following text:

Yesterday my whole world stopped…. I lost my youngest son the worst way possible. Now i must plan a funeral for my son. I am a single mother. Funeral expenses are not in my reach. This won’t bring my baby back but at least he can be buried properly. REST IN PARADISE JAYCIEION REYES_AZIZ.
