HURRICANE, Utah, Sept. 19, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A Tooele man died Sunday after struggling to stay afloat in Sand Hollow State Park the day before.

Nicholas Floyd, 21, was swimming to an island with friends on Saturday when he told them he was having difficulties staying above water, according to Utah State Parks officials.

His friends kept him above water while a nearby search and rescue vessel, training in the area, raced to the scene. Workers took Floyd into the boat and started emergency procedures.

Floyd was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center, but did not recover and was taken off life support late Sunday afternoon. Floyd was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of his emergency.

Floyd’s is the 11th reported recreational drowning death in Utah in 2016.
