PLEASANT VIEW, Utah, June 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A trailer full of hay caught fire on I-15 causing visibility issues and massive delays on the freeway in Pleasant view Friday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Dave McKay said the incident happened just before 1 p.m. near mile marker 351 when a man who was pulling bales of hay on a 21-foot trailer behind his truck noticed an issue with the brakes.

“He had just picked up the hay in Cache Valley and was headed south on I-15 when he said he could tell something was wrong with the brakes,” McKay said. “He pulled over the side of the road and was able to unhook the trailer from his truck.”

McKay said the load of hay was fairly green causing lots of smoke and some small flames, leading to visibility issues for both north and southbound traffic.

“It took three hours to clean this up because we had to spread apart all the hay to make sure the fire was completely out,” McKay said. “The hay had to then be loaded into three dump trucks to be hauled away.”

No one was injured in the incident. McKay said the trailer was a total loss, as was all the hay.
