JUAB COUNTY, Utah, May 13, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper headed home from training in Salt Lake City Friday evening witnessed a single-vehicle rollover on I-15  that injured both the driver and a passenger.

UHP said the accident happened at approximately 6 p.m. on northbound I-15 near mile post 198 about 9 miles north of Scipio.

Witnesses who stopped at the crash scene said the driver was operating the vehicle aggressively and travelling in excess of 100 mph.

The accident happened after the driver passed a semi truck using the right shoulder. The vehicle drifted off the pavement and into the dirt. The driver over-corrected, slid across both lanes of I-15, and then rolled multiple times into the median before coming to a rest on its top.

The female occupant, 28-year-old Johanna Scheetz of Provo, was ejected. She was in critical condition and transported by ground ambulance to Central Valley Hospital in Nephi before being flown by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo.

The male occupant, Patrick Gabbitas, remained in the vehicle as it rolled. He was transported by ground ambulance to Central Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers said Gabbitas and Scheetz are giving conflicting stories as to who was driving. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
