SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 3, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Department of Transportation is advising drivers to plan ahead for a weekend closure of the 500 South freeway on-ramps near downtown Salt Lake City starting Friday night.
In addition, on Monday, an on-ramp to I-215 in West Valley City will close for 45 days, UDOT said in a news release.
The ramp from 500 South to I-80 is scheduled to close from 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday night. Once this ramp reopens, work will shift to the ramp from 500 South to I-15, which will close from this weekend, from Saturday to Sunday nights. All lanes on both ramps will reopen at 6 a.m. Monday.
During these ramp closures, detour routes will be in place. Drivers should plan to use alternate routes such as 1300 South and 600 North to get onto I-15, where they can continue to I-80 if needed.
The work on the 500 South ramp is the final phase of a bridge maintenance project that began in March. Crews have removed and replaced the top layer of pavement -– a special “weatherproofing” layer designed to prevent corrosion due to water and road salt -– on nearly 40 freeway ramps and bridges around the Salt Lake Valley.
Starting Monday,two other projects will affect drivers in Salt Lake County:
- In West Valley City, the ramp from eastbound 3500 South to northbound I-215 will close prior to the morning commute. This ramp will remain closed through September for pavement reconstruction. Suggested alternate routes include 4700 South and Redwood Road.
- In South Jordan, work will begin to widen 10600 South from South Jordan Gateway to Redwood Road. For the first few weeks, construction will be concentrated primarily in the median, and drivers should plan ahead for delays and traffic shifts. This project will add one travel lane in each direction, as well as repaving the road and adding turn lanes at two intersections. Construction will be complete in fall 2018.
