SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 24, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol troopers arrested a man with Iowa plates after they say he fled an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 80 Monday morning, reaching a speed estimated at 113 mph.

The incident started on westbound I-80 near milepost 179, says an affidavit filed for 21-year-old Calvin Scott.

“I received a radar reading on the vehicle at 91 miles per hour in a posted 80 zone,” the trooper’s statement says. “When I activated my emergency red and blue lights to conduct a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle increased in speed and failed to stop.

“I activated my siren and a vehicle pursuit was initiated westbound on I-80. The driver of the Nissan reached top speeds of approximately 113 miles per hour while fleeing from me

Another trooper deployed tire spikes, “and deflated the two front tires of the vehicle. The vehicle came to a stop in the right shoulder of Interstate I-84 at approximately milepost 119. One male driver and one female passenger were placed under arrest. A 4-year-old child was inside the vehicle on the back seat, not properly restrained in a child seat or child booster seat.”

The driver identified himself as Scott.

“A records check on Scott revealed he had an active warrant out of Iowa that was listed NCIC as fully extraditable. Scott’s driver license out of Illinois returned expired as of 07/2024. I advised Scott of his Miranda Rights and he refused to speak with me further.”

The female passenger was identified by an Iowa driver’s licence. The vehicle was registered to her. She has no charges against her that are visible in the Utah online court records.

“Both occupants stated they were traveling to California but were unaware of exactly where, and were extremely vague in regard to their travels,” Scott’s affidavit says. “Post Miranda, (the woman) was uncooperative and provided no information as to why Scott fled from my attempt to conduct a traffic stop.”

She “stated she didn’t know he was wanted out of Iowa but would not provide any further information. The 4-year-old child is the son of (the woman) and had to be placed with DCFS pending her release from jail. (The woman) and Scott were transported and booked into the Summit County Jail.”

Scott was arrested for investigation of:

  • Failure to stop or respond at command of police, a third-degree felony
  • Endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony
  • Reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor
  • Failure to provide child restraint device for child younger than 8, an infraction
  • No valid license, expired, an infraction
