WEST VALLEY CITY, April 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol officials have identified a motorcyclist who died in a hit-and-run crash on State Route 201 in West Valley City in the early hours of Friday morning.

The deceased is David Lee Haines, 63, of Salt Lake City, according to UHP officials.

The deadly crash happened about 3 a.m. on SR-201 just west of Interstate 215, officials said.

Witnesses told UHP investigators that one or both of the vehicles had been driving aggressively prior to the collision.

“We have a witness who stated he saw both vehicles not maintaining their lane, as well as traveling at a little bit higher rate of speed than the rest of the traffic,” Sgt. Justin Dial, Utah Highway Patrol, told Gephardt Daily at the scene.

Additional witnesses saw the driver of the car walking away from the scene, Dial said.

In a statement posted on Twitter Friday night the UHP said an arrest had been made after the incident.

“The suspect from this morning’s hit-and-run crash on SR-201 at 2700 West has been caught by our Operation Rio Grande Narcotics Unit,” the statement said. “He has been arrested and will be booked into Salt Lake County Metro Jail. A great job done by your Troopers and SBI Agents.”
