Shoplifting Suspect Assaults Security Guard, Leads Utah Troopers On Freeway Foot Chase

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Law officers say a man who was caught shoplifting, then struck the security guard in the head with a pipe, was apprehended after Utah Highway Patrol troopers chased him down on foot on SR-201.

Salt Lake City Police said 41-year-old Jason Vaillancourt was being chased by the security guard at a Flying J, at 2025 S. 900 West, just before 6 p.m. Sunday when witnesses reported seeing Vaillancourt hit the guard with a pipe and run toward the freeway.

The 39-year-old security guard was seriously injured and sustained a fractured skull. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers located the suspect walking along SR-201 and caught him after a short foot chase.

Vaillancourt was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for felony aggravated robbery with serious bodily injury to another individual, and for failing to stop at the command of law enforcement.
