GRANTSVILLE, Utah, Dec. 3, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews from multiple agencies responded after a vintage artillery shell was found in the backyard of a Grantsville residence.

The call came in at about 5 p.m. Sunday, said a statement issued Monday by the Unified Fire Authority. The first agency to respond was Grantsville Fire.

“When they found what they found, they ended up calling us, and we got the bomb squad en route from our Special Enforcement Division,” Benjamin Porter, UFA spokesman, told Gephardt Daily.

“They went and they used a robot to X-ray the 155 millimeter artillery shell, and found that it was still a live round.

“And so when they realized it was live, they had people sheltering in place until the Air Force got there, and a section of the U.S. Air Force came. They took the ordnance and went to dispose of it properly.”

Porter said what was found is believed to be a World War II era 155mm artillery shell.

Porter said he did not know how the shell came to be in the yard of the residence, in the 300 block of Cherry Street.
