COPPERTON, Utah, July 30, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Fire Authority crews were called to a field fire on Kennecott Copper Mine property, south of Copperton Township, late Tuesday afternoon, and found themselves fighting two separate fires in the same area.

By 7 p.m., both fires were fully contained, UFA public information officer Matt McFarland said.

McFarland said the fires, each two to three acres in size, were entirely on property owned by Kennecott where there is no public access. There were no injuries, and no structures were threatened.

Kennecott spokesman Kyle Bennett told Gephardt Daily, “We heard about it around 5:45, and we’re still looking into it. It was by a power substation, but we don’t know if that had anything to do with it.”

He said Kennecott will be investigating to try to determine the exact cause of the fires.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
