Update: Unified firefighters battle 2-alarm blaze in Kearns strip mall

KEARNS, Utah, Jan. 15, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified firefighters are battling a 2-alarm fire which broke out in Kearns early Wednesday morning.

According to a statement by the Unified Fire Authority, the fire involves a one-story L-shaped strip mall at 4703 West 5415 South.

Crews were first dispatched to the fire about 3:43 a.m. When they arrived, they “found pallets on fire adjacent to a building, with flames spreading to the structure,” the UFA said.

“Command has declared this a defensive fire due to the risk of collapse.”

Benjamin Porter, public information officer for the UFA, spoke to reporters on scene, and said in addition to dealing with the heavy smoke and flames, firefighters were having to cope with what he called a very icy scene.

“When we’re pumping this much water and we’re trying to get this fire out, the entire road, all the sidewalks, everything’s really icy. I think it’s probably going to be a while before they open this road up and let people through.”

Porter said the strip mall was home to a pizza carry out and another businesses.

He said there were no reports of injuries.

Traffic on SR-173 has been closed in both directions throughout the morning.
