KEARNS, Utah, Oct. 22, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Police have identified a 20-year-old man who died in a shooting overnight Saturday on South Cougar Lane.
The deceased is Joshua Belen, the Unified Police Department said in a tweet Sunday afternoon.
Detectives are also looking into what sent a different person to the hospital in critical condition, to determine if the two incidents are related.
UPD Detective Ken Hansen told Gephardt Daily that the shooting occurred at 11:20 p.m., and the victim was found in the northwest parking lot of the Olympic Oval, at 5662 Cougar Lane.
Hansen said police believe the man was shot where he was found, but they will be checking for any evidence that might indicate a different location.
“We have detectives up here just examining what evidence is available,” he said, “and hope we have a chance to talk to the person who is at the hospital in critical condition to see if they can help us put this all together.”
Hansen said he believes the person in the hospital is male, and he apparently was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.
When asked if there were any witnesses to the shooting, Hansen replied, “We think there may be witnesses who heard it, but I don’t know if we have witnesses that actually observed it. We’re canvassing the area.
“When they have a homicide, there’s always a lot of evidence to find, recover and process. In this case, because it’s dark, we’ll be here…to look for more evidence during daylight hours,” Hansen said.
He added that it was still too early in the investigation to tell if the incident is gang-related.
Gephardt Daily will follow this developing story and update it as information becomes available.
