MIDVALE, Utah, Nov. 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — An armed man who argued with an acquaintance outside a Midvale credit union on Thursday ended up brandishing a firearm at the man, then fighting with a police officer who arrived at the scene.
The exchange began at about 4:40 p.m. near the Jordan Credit Union, off Center Street, said Sgt. Melody Gray, Unified Police Department.
“We had a vehicle that was in the drive-thru,” Gray told reporters at the scene.
“When a man approached them, words were exchanged between the parties. Apparently they were familiar with each other, and a gun was brandished.”
Someone called police dispatch, and an officer arrived to look for the two men.
“He came around this corner back here, where he encountered both of those males,” Gray said. “One of them took off running. He (the UPD officer) was able to challenged the other one. A fight ensued. That officer was assaulted and that individual was able to get away. He (the second fleeing suspect) did pull out that weapon again, so he is armed.”
The two men were taken into custody at approximately 5:40 p.m.
The officer assaulted is OK, Gray said.
“He’s fine. No severe injury.” The only weapon used was the suspect’s hands, she said.
Gray said one person who was handcuffed nearby was believed to be someone who knew both men, but police did not think he was involved in the altercation
