SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 28, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified police are investigating the discovery of a man’s body was found in a car near the top of Emigration Canyon Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Unified Police Department Detective Ken Hansen told Gephardt Daily at approximately 5:30 p.m, officials received information that there was a car about a mile-and-a-half from the top of the canyon that had a tarp over the top of it and there was yellow smoke billowing out.
“Our officers stopped by and removed the tarp and noticed there was an individual in the car, about mid-30s, who is deceased,” Hansen said. “It appeared there was some briquettes in the trunk that had been lit.”
Hansen said officials are treating the death as suspicious at this time.
“It appears that somebody was either trying to heat the vehicle, put heat in, but it could be a variety of things,” Hansen added.
A detective is on scene speaking with a witness, Hansen said.
The medical examiner is en route to remove the body as of 7:30 p.m., he added, so it may take some time to determine the cause of death.
A Hazmat team also responded to make sure there were no hazardous chemicals at the scene.

My mom and I were actually running down Emigration Canyon this morning at about 8:45-9:00am (March 28th) for my birthday. We both saw that car sitting there covered on the pullout right there and we both independently thought it was odd that a car sitting right there was covered because it is a spot in the canyon that is clearly not private property or someone’s driveway. Besides that nothing seemed odd…I definitely didn’t see smoke or anything. I’m interested to hear what the timing of things was and what likely happened. So crazy.
