UTAH, June 22, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — The University of Utah Health has implemented revised visiting policies effective Monday.

“At University of Utah Health, we recognize the valuable emotional and/or physical support that a family member, companion, friend, neighbor or other caregiver can provide a patient during an appointment or hospital stay,” said a news release from officials. “We also strive to balance that critical role with the need to protect all patients, those accompanying patients, and staff from the potential spread of COVID-19.”

The revised policy has been established to protect patients, those supporting patients, providers, and staff in both inpatient and ambulatory (outpatient) settings.

The following Visitor Policy is in place at U of U Health facilities for all inpatient and ambulatory (outpatient) visits:

General Guidelines

Because of the potential spread of COVID-19, patients are discouraged from bringing another individual to their inpatient or ambulatory (outpatient) appointment, although patients can be accompanied/visited as follows:

Inpatient: One individual 18 years of age or older may be present per day with an admitted patient in their room during visiting hours from 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. This designated individual cannot be replaced by another individual on the same visiting day. Leaders can discuss special circumstances or requests with their local executive.

Ambulatory (Outpatient): One individual 12 years of age or older may accompany a patient to a scheduled procedure or provider appointment. Leaders can discuss special circumstances or requests with the Ambulatory Health Chief Medical Officer that may require adjustment.

Scheduled Surgery or Procedure: One individual 18 years of age or older may accompany a patient for the duration of their procedure. This designated individual cannot be replaced by another individual.

All individuals accompanying patients to U of U Health facilities must be free of COVID-19 symptoms. In addition, all patients and companions must wear a face covering or mask when entering U of U Health facilities and at all times while inside U of U Health facilities.
