Police: UPD officer attacked by vandal

MURRAY, Utah, Dec. 21, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspected vandal resisting arrest on Thursday knocked a Unified Police officer to the ground and struck him multiple times before citizens stepped in to help.

According to information from the UPD, the incident happened at about noon Thursday at at 909 E. 4500 South. The suspect was seen trying to break a window at the Murray Smoke Shop when the officer tried to intervene.

The officer deployed a Taser, which did not deter the man. Store employees were able to pull the suspect off the officer.

In the fight, the officer sustained head injuries, and was transported to a hospital where he was treated before being released.

“We are grateful for the citizens who helped him,” said a tweet from the Unified Police Department.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Ousseynou Niang, was taken into custody.
