MILLCREEK, UTAH – August 26, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – The Unified Police Department (UPD) is warning the public of an ongoing scam in the Salt Lake County area.

Police said the most recent calls have come from a male with a “southern” accent.  The male identifies himself as a Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy and tells the victim they have recently missed jury duty, and gives a specific date missed.

The suspect goes on to tell the victim that they currently have a warrant for their arrest and that they can either meet in front of Judge Baxter at a specific time and date, or they can go to Smith’s and get a money order or wire the $500 directly to the account to make the warrant/charge go away.

The UPD has had a couple of these in the last month in the Millcreek Township, and are asking for the public’s help to obtain more information on this suspect.

The department said in a statement: “Understand that we are no longer deputy sheriffs.  We are now officers with UPD.  Furthermore, the Unified Police Department would never ask anyone for money over the phone or ask anyone to wire us money.  Courts and responsible for reconciling outstanding fines as is the Salt Lake County Jail in their own regard.”

If someone has more information on this suspect, has been a victim of this suspect, or sees someone impersonating a deputy sheriff, we would ask that they call 801-743-7000 for activities in progress or Millcreek Detectives at 385-468-9620 to report a past event.
