DRAPER, Utah, Dec. 30, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 30-year-old woman is facing multiple charges including suspected DUI after a head-on wrong-way crash in Draper early Sunday morning that left a woman in critical condition.

Police were first called to 838 W. 11400 South just before 1 a.m. When officers arrived they found an SUV and a mid-sized passenger car had collided head-on.

First responders worked for more than 30 minutes to free 19-year-old Sonya Wilson from the car. Officers on scene said she had suffered extensive leg injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Wilson’s family says the teen’s lacks insurance and has set up a GoFundMe account to offset medical expenses.

A probable cause statement from Salt Lake City’s 3rd District Court said Bobbi Leigh Phillips, the woman who hit Wilson, was arrested at 1:40 a.m. and is facing charges of third-degree felony DUI with serious bodily injury, class B misdemeanor possession of controlled substance marijuana/spice and driving on the wrong side of the roadway.

The probable cause statement said witnesses saw Phillips driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of travel and striking Wilson’s vehicle head-on.

“The subject was in the driver seat of vehicle and admitted to driving,” the arresting officer wrote in the statement. “As I began speaking to the driver, I could immediately smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The subject had red, bloodshot eyes and had slow, lethargic speech.”

A standardized field sobriety test was performed and Phillips was then arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail with bail set at $5,000.

During an inventory of the vehicle after the impound, suspected marijuana, less than one ounce, was recovered from the vehicle.

Draper and South Jordan police were both dispatched to the accident site.

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team was also called in to aid in the investigation.

The name of the injured driver has yet to be released.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information is made available.
