Update: Evacuations ordered for all of Hobble Creek Canyon, parts of Springville, Mapleton

UTAH COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 7, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — All of Hobble Creek Canyon and parts of Springville and Mapleton near the base of the mountain are being evacuated due to the Ether Hollow Fire, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook at about 9:15 p.m. Monday.

“Multiple fire agencies are fighting the fire. Utah County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Search and Rescue are evacuating Hobble Creek Canyon. Springville and Mapleton Police are evacuating selected areas of their cities near the base of the mountain,” the post says.

Evacuations were already underway in Mapleton by about 7:30 p.m., and it was anticipated that Hobble Creek Canyon also would be evacuated.

The strong winds have been pushing the blaze as well as preventing aerial firefighting resources from flying.

The Ether Hollow Fire was initially estimated at 15 to 20 acres when first reported. By about 7 p.m., it had grown to 500 acres, and at 8 p.m. was estimated at 1000 acres.

Both upper and lower sections of the Grind Stone community have been evacuated. Roughly 80 personnel are assigned including air, heavy equipment and ground resources, a tweet from Utah Fire Info said at 8 p.m. Monday.

Utah Fire Info also tweeted: “Two major fires in two days caused by target shooting. This is not the time to carelessly shoot into the wildlands folks. This has to stop. #ffsljc”

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information is made known.
