Update: Fatal West Jordan police shooting captured on video

WEST JORDAN, Utah, May 28, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The fatal officer-involved shooting of an armed robbery suspect in West Jordan on Monday was captured on a bystander’s cellphone.

The video — obtained by Gephardt Daily — shows the final moments of the suspect’s confrontation with police just after he allegedly used a gun in the robbery of a 7-Eleven at 6200 South and Dixie Road.

The street-view footage shows the suspect as he commandeers a West Jordan officer’s vehicle and then attempts to speed off, triggering a hail of police gunfire followed by the sound of screeching brakes and a collision.

The suspect — whose name has yet to be released — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police initially reported the suspect had been stopped by a West Jordan K-9 patrol officer who was responding to the 7-Eleven robbery call at about 2 p.m.

During the stop the officer exited his truck, only to have it stolen by the suspect seconds before he was shot.

A police K-9 was in the back of the hijacked police vehicle when officers opened fire, but was uninjured.

The occupants of two vehicles hit while the suspect attempted to flee were taken to the hospital with what police called “non-life threatening” injuries.
