HYRUM, Utah, June 29, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) -- The Cache County Sheriff's Office has announced that two people are dead after a SWAT operation at a Hyrum residence came to an end.

“We have two individuals who are deceased. No one is at large. We will not have more information for a while,” said Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mikelshan Bartschi late Sunday afternoon.

Word of the fatalities came hours after Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen posted a statement online saying the scene was secure.

"I have turned over the Investigation to the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team. The Cache County Attorneys Office will be the contact moving forward," Jensen said.

The release offered no additional information, such as whether additional shots were fired, or what actions or discovery may have led to the resolution.

An initial news release from the CCSO said that at about 5 a.m. Sunday, a man called dispatch reporting he had killed his wife.

Multiple agencies with armored vehicles responded to the residence.

"Once on scene, the suspect, a 45-year-old man, opened fire on responding deputies. The deputy found cover and the Sheriff's SWAT team was called.

"The suspect opened fire on the SWAT team and they returned fire."

Armored vehicles from Logan City, Brigham City and Ogden City were called, and containment was set up around the house.

"Negotiations teams made contact with the suspect and the suspect sent pictures of his bomb vest and what appeared to be explosives inside the house," the initial news release says, adding "there has been no contact with the suspect for a few hours and armored vehicles are clearing windows so SWAT officers can see into the house."

Gephardt Daily will have additional information as details are confirmed.
