MEADOW, Utah, Nov. 26, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials have identified a 33-year-old man who died after he slipped under a ledge in Meadow Hot Spring in the early hours of Sunday morning, and could not free himself.

Millard County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Robert Clark told Gephardt Daily the deceased is Joseph Avery Buttrill-MacGregor, from Holladay.

Authorities responded to the incident just after 4 a.m. Sunday, after two witnesses that were with the man called 911, Clark said.

Buttrill-MacGregor was at the hot spring with his brother and at least one other person that was known to him, though it’s not clear at this stage exactly who called for assistance.

The man had gone under the water and somehow became trapped under a ledge inside the hot spring, Clark said. After he did not resurface, the witnesses called authorities.

Officials arrived at the scene but could not see the man; a diver was then called in and retrieved the man’s body approximately one hour later.

Buttrill-MacGregor had minor cuts and scrapes on his head. His body has been transported to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner to determine his exact cause of death, Clark said.

Meadow Hot Spring consists of three unregulated soaking areas which are located on private property, just south of Fillmore.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
