BOUNTIFUL, Utah, Dec. 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials have identified a semi driver who died after crashing his rig into an overhead sign support and a concrete barrier on Interstate 15 in Bountiful Monday night.

The deceased is Eugene Eldridge, 60, of West Valley City, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

The news release said the semi tractor trailer was traveling northbound on I-15 near 500 South in West Bountiful, just after 8 p.m.

“It traveled off of the freeway to the right, crossed through the gore area of the on-ramp and into the dirt area between the freeway’s fence and a movie theater parking lot,” the news release said. “The semi never braked before colliding into the heavy steel post that supports the 400 North exit sign and a concrete barrier.”

The driver was given CPR by arriving officers and others, but they lost a heartbeat. The driver was taken to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful where he was pronounced dead. Investigators believe that the driver suffered from a medical problem before crashing.

No one else was involved in the crash.
